Kingfisher on a Branch
Kingfisher (order Coraciiformes).
The Kingfishers are a bright and varied bunch, comprised of about 90 species and are often divided into three suborders of families: the river kingfishers (Alcedinidae), the tree kingfishers (Halcyonidae), and the water kingfishers (Cerylidae). However, all our little kingfishers share strikingly similar characteristics! You'll recognize them by their large round heads, pointy, elongated bills, wee legs and short tails. Some however like to stand out amongst the crowd boasting a birdie mo-hawk to strut their stuff. Striking blue, green, iridescent and even orange plumage will catch your eye if you look for them nesting in a river bank tunnel, or dug out cavity, as they perch before swooping in to catch a fish for dinner!
